Queer tango defies gender stereotypes. Traditional roles of leader and follower are abandoned, and identity becomes fluid. It has become a place where members of Russia’s LGBT community can be truly free. While sexual minorities can learn how to dance in any gay-friendly tango studio, this is a space where they can feel completely comfortable: in specialized queer tango clubs where there is no pressure to fit in. Queer tango is not only about the love of dance but also about the desire to find company. Queer tango dance clubs are becoming sites for LGBT people to find new friends and partners and start relationships. Tango catalyzes something deeply intimate between people — and in a society where LGBT people are not always welcome, queer tango is one of the rare ways where members of this community can express themselves publicly and get acquainted offline.
